UV Printing

Direct-to-aluminum UV digital printing technology that brings unlimited design possibilities — photographic images, custom graphics, brand identities and artistic patterns in vivid, durable color.

Overview

What Is UV Printing?

UV Printing Sample 1
UV Printing Sample 2

UV printing, also known as UV-cured digital printing, is a non-contact printing technology that uses ultraviolet light to instantly cure specially formulated inks as they are deposited onto the aluminum surface. Unlike conventional printing that requires absorption and drying time, UV inks are photo-initiated and solidify immediately upon UV exposure.

Ballesta operates advanced UV flatbed printers capable of printing directly onto aluminum panels, sheets and profiles with exceptional precision. The print heads jet microscopic droplets of CMYK + white ink in variable sizes, achieving smooth gradients and sharp details down to 6pt text. The white ink layer enables printing on dark or metallic backgrounds, and a protective varnish can be applied as a final layer.

Because each image is printed directly from digital files without screens, plates or setup costs, UV printing is ideal for short runs, custom designs, prototypes and projects requiring unique, individual artwork on every panel.

Capabilities

Printing Capabilities

Photographic Quality

Up to 2880 x 1440 dpi resolution captures every detail of photographs, artwork and complex designs. Variable droplet technology ensures smooth color transitions and precise text reproduction.

Unlimited Customization

Every panel can be individually printed with different artwork at no additional cost. Ideal for wayfinding signage, brand installations, retail displays and projects requiring unique per-panel graphics.

White Ink & Varnish

White ink layer enables printing on brushed, anodized or dark-colored aluminum. Glossy and matte varnish options provide surface protection and selective gloss effects for enhanced visual impact.

Key Advantages

Why Choose UV Printing

Any Design, Any Panel

No artwork is too complex — photographs, gradients, brand logos, patterns and fine text can all be printed with exceptional clarity. Change artwork between each panel at no cost.

Zero Setup Cost

No plate making, screen preparation or minimum order quantities. Print a single custom panel or a thousand at the same per-unit setup cost. Ideal for prototypes and custom work.

Instant Curing

UV ink cures instantly under UV light, allowing immediate handling and further processing (cutting, drilling, edge bending). No drying time required compared to solvent-based prints.

Vivid Color Saturation

UV inks produce highly saturated colors with excellent opacity. White ink backing allows vibrant printing on dark aluminum substrates. Gloss varnish enhances depth and richness.

Environmentally Clean

UV inks contain no VOCs and produce minimal odor. The instant-cure process eliminates ink waste from drying and reduces energy consumption compared to thermal drying systems.

Scratch & Chemical Resistant

Cured UV ink forms a hard, durable surface that resists scratching, rubbing and mild chemical exposure. Adding a protective varnish further enhances durability in high-traffic areas.

Applications

Typical Applications

  • Architectural Signage: Wayfinding signs, room identification, directory boards and building identification panels
  • Retail & Brand Installations: Branded wall panels, retail display graphics and logo-backlit ceiling panels
  • Corporate Interiors: Reception area feature walls, conference room panels with company branding or artwork
  • Museums & Exhibitions: Graphic panels, exhibit displays and interpretive signage with photographic content
  • Hospitality: Hotel room art panels, restaurant feature walls and bar front panels with decorative graphics
  • Sports & Entertainment: Stadium club lounges, VIP areas and themed entertainment spaces with custom printed panels

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum print resolution for UV printing on aluminum?

Ballesta's UV flatbed printers can achieve up to 2880 x 1440 dpi resolution, producing sharp, detailed images with smooth gradients and precise color reproduction. Text as small as 6pt is clearly readable.

Can UV printing be used for outdoor aluminum panels?

UV printing is best suited for interior applications. Standard UV inks have limited UV resistance and may fade or yellow with prolonged sun exposure. For outdoor use, we offer UV-resistant inks and can apply a protective clear top coat, but the longevity is still less than PVDF or powder-coated finishes.

What file formats do you accept for UV printing?

We accept AI, PDF, EPS, CDR, TIFF, JPEG and PNG files. CMYK color mode is preferred for accurate color reproduction. Our pre-press team can assist with file preparation and proofing before production.

What is the largest panel size for UV printing?

Ballesta's UV flatbed printers accommodate panels up to 1,500 mm (width) x 3,000 mm (length), with thickness up to 50mm. Multiple panels can be printed as a tiled image for larger installations.

How durable are UV printed panels under daily use?

UV cured inks form a hard, cross-linked surface that resists scratching, mild abrasion and cleaning chemicals. With a protective varnish layer, UV printed panels are suitable for high-traffic interior environments such as retail stores, hotel lobbies and corporate offices. For best longevity, avoid abrasive cleaners and direct outdoor exposure.

Can I match specific brand colors with UV printing?

Yes. Ballesta's UV printers use CMYK plus white ink, and we calibrate to GRACoL and Fogra standards for accurate color reproduction. For critical brand color matching, we recommend requesting a physical print proof before production. Our pre-press team can adjust color profiles to closely match Pantone references, though absolute spot color matching may require alternative finishing technologies.
