What Is PVC Lamination?

PVC film lamination is a surface finishing process where a pre-manufactured decorative PVC (polyvinyl chloride) film is permanently bonded to an aluminum substrate using high-performance adhesive and controlled pressure. The film is applied either through automated roll lamination machines for flat panels or by vacuum membrane pressing for profiled shapes.

The process begins with surface preparation, including cleaning and primer application to ensure maximum adhesive bond strength. The PVC film is then applied with precision, using rollers or vacuum pressure to eliminate air bubbles and ensure complete edge wrapping. The finished product has a seamless, factory-quality appearance.

Is PVC lamination suitable for outdoor use?

PVC lamination is primarily recommended for interior applications. While the PVC film itself has some UV resistance, prolonged direct sunlight exposure can cause delamination or discoloration. For exterior use, we recommend heat transfer wood/stone grain or painted finishes instead.

What is the difference between PVC lamination and heat transfer?

PVC lamination bonds a pre-printed PVC film to the substrate using adhesive and pressure. Heat transfer uses high temperature to sublimate ink into the coating layer. Lamination is more economical and offers a wider pattern variety, while heat transfer provides superior edge durability and weather resistance for exterior use.

What thickness of PVC film does Ballesta use?

We use PVC films ranging from 0.12mm to 0.30mm thickness depending on the application. Thinner films (0.12-0.18mm) are used for flat panels and profiles, while thicker films (0.20-0.30mm) are specified for high-traffic areas requiring additional abrasion resistance.

Can PVC laminated panels be cleaned and maintained easily?

Yes. PVC laminated surfaces are easy to clean with mild soap and water. The film surface is non-porous and resistant to most common household cleaning agents. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads that could scratch the film surface.

How long does PVC lamination last compared to painted finishes?

Under normal interior conditions, PVC lamination can last 10-15 years or more before showing signs of wear. While painted finishes may offer longer durability in extreme conditions, PVC lamination provides excellent life expectancy for interior applications at a significantly lower cost. Proper installation and avoiding direct UV exposure are key to maximizing service life.
