What Is Coil Coating?

Coil coating, also known as pre-painting, is a continuous roll-coating process where aluminum coil passes through a multi-stage production line before being cut, formed or fabricated. The process begins with chemical pre-treatment for surface cleaning and conversion coating, followed by primer application, oven curing, top coat application and final curing.

Ballesta does not operate an in-house coil coating line. Instead, we source pre-painted aluminum coils from a network of established, ISO-certified finishing partners with decades of specialized experience. This partnership model allows us to offer a wider range of coating chemistries and specifications than any single production line could provide, while maintaining strict quality control through incoming inspection and batch traceability.

Pre-painted aluminum is the preferred choice for large-scale architectural projects where color consistency across thousands of square meters is critical. Because the coating is applied to flat coil before roll-forming or bending, the finish remains intact throughout fabrication, with no cut edges or handling damage typical of post-painted panels. PVDF Coating

PVDF (Fluorocarbon)

The gold standard for exterior durability. PVDF (70%+ polyvinylidene fluoride resin) offers exceptional UV resistance, color retention and chalk resistance for 20+ years, making it the preferred choice for high-profile facades and landmark buildings.

Key characteristics: Outstanding weather resistance and longevity. However, due to the chemical nature of fluorocarbon resins, color saturation is limited — PVDF coatings cannot achieve very bright or vivid colors, and the gloss range is restricted to 30–70 units (60° gloss meter). Ideal for projects where long-term durability is the primary concern and subtle metallic or standard RAL colors are acceptable.

FEVE Coating

FEVE

High-durability fluorocarbon with vivid color potential. FEVE (fluoroethylene vinyl ether) resin delivers weather resistance comparable to PVDF, but with a key advantage — it can achieve high color saturation and gloss levels up to 90+ units, enabling much more vibrant architectural finishes.

Trade-offs: FEVE is more expensive than PVDF, and the cured coating is slightly more brittle, resulting in reduced formability (bending and roll-forming performance). Best suited for projects that require both long-term durability AND vivid color expression, where the budget allows and forming requirements are moderate.

Polyester Coating

Polyester (PE)

The cost-effective choice for interior use. Standard polyester (PE) coating offers full color saturation with bright, vivid colors at an economical price point. It is the preferred option for indoor ceiling and wall panels where direct UV exposure is not a concern.

Best for: Interior environments with stable temperature and humidity — retail spaces, office buildings, schools, hospitals and commercial interiors. Wide range of standard RAL colors available with fast lead times. Not recommended for exterior applications where prolonged sunlight exposure would cause chalking and fading.

HDP Coating

HDP (High Durability Polyester)

Increasingly preferred for exterior projects. HDP combines the color richness of standard polyester with significantly enhanced weather resistance. It delivers the vivid, saturated colors that PVDF cannot achieve, while maintaining good durability for exterior use.

Added advantage: HDP supports micro-bubble technology, which creates various textured surface effects (fine stipple, leather grain, sand-like finishes) that PVDF and standard PE cannot replicate. Recommended for exterior applications in non-extreme environments — building facades in temperate climates, commercial canopies, and covered walkways where both aesthetics and weather resistance are important.
